At work recently we were humouring ourselves in about the topic of our favourite style icons and were justifying each star’s style status. It’s a clichéd topic I realise, but I’m always curious to find out why certain personalities are influential.
Common names that are thrown around in the fashion style stakes are Kate Moss, Jackie Kennedy, Agyness Dean and Audrey Hepburn, who are the easy choices, but I’ve always admired the avant-garde icons who dress with unashamed self expression. These people, I feel, are the real individuals with iconic style.
At the moment, I’m loving Roisin Murphy, one of today’s top pop singers with incredible stage costumes and a total couture groupie. Make sure you check out some of her film clips.
Leigh Bowery is perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea, he was however an iconic Australian, who was not only a pop star but a fashion designer, performance artist, club promoter, model and of course actor. He was considered one of the more influential figures in the 80’s and 90s in the London scene for his shocking appearance and behaviour. I think I find him so inspirational is because he was completely brave enough to just be himself, with a sense of humour
The magnificent Grace Jones, a totally fierce androgynous singer and top supermodel of the 80’s. Love everything about her and her career
Dame Vivienne Westwood is one of my all time favourite designers who started out as a Sex Pistols groupie and is now largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream. Her designs have always been controversial, along with her lifestyle, but she remains one of the few designers who have been able to stay innovative after 40 years in the industry.
And lastly, for some reason I find Kath’s outfits genius (from kath and kim).
As much as I like trends and fashions, I definitely prefer the brave icons. I think perhaps the best way to imitate someone’s style, is to be influenced by their individuality. Thanks for reading!
