As an architect, creativity is my life-blood!
Being creative is my passion and I love the fact that my charitable organization, bricks+cartwheels, uses my creative talents to help people less fortunate than myself. Both in my job and my work for bricks + cartwheels, I love that I’m able to be creative with a very practical outcome- it balances my personality perfectly!
With bricks + cartwheels, we’re currently designing a school for girls in Kenya and at the moment we’re working on the overall masterplan for the school. Were taking quite a practical approach at the moment, working with the community’s brief to firstly provide a school that addresses all their needs but also striving to provide an enriching and stimulating learning environment- something that’s not normally considered in developing communities where the resources are so scarce.
We can’t wait to go back to Kenya and work with the community on the more detailed parts of the design! We’ll use a combination of drawings, sketches and models to best communicate our ideas and the design process will be very much a participatory one. We’ll be able to guide the decision making process with the community so that the decisions made are informed but it will be the community that makes the crucial decisions that will effect the school and the details of the buildings.
There’s lots of research and fundraising to be done before we head back to Kenya, we often wish we could just pack in our jobs and leave for Kenya today… dream on!
